The slider is what initially caught my eye and I like the way it's wired into WP dash with it's own top level entry, using the editor to fill the text of the slide and uploading the actual slide pic as the image.

By not including it into the template again if you do not want that, Other than that, the area directly above the theme by default is area, allowing you to input whatever you would like, so the easiest thing to do would be to turn off the blog area..
